Although many of the same topics are used throughout the novel, it is important to know that not every single one of these items will be used. Students will research their favorite characters, such as Offred's family, through various sources. The characters are similar to characters in other novels, although they do differ in many ways. Offred is married to Offred II, a general in the British Army, and her views on religion are similar to those of her husband.Literature plays a large role in society debate in the novel. Several of the major characters have had considerable influence on literary history. Some of the main characters have even written books, although the majority of the most prominent books in the novel were written by Margaret Atwood.Literature plays a large role in the society and women's religion, as well. It is through Margaret Atwood's novels that the opinions of women are developed and debated. Several women wrote extensively about the Handmaid's Tale and its impact on their religious beliefs and community.Although the essay topics above are common, many students feel that they can add something new to the discussion. One student did add to this topic by using a broader definition of religion. She said that there were several religions in the novel, such as the Catholic religion and Anglican religion, and that it was important to know which religion the Handmaid's practiced.
