Similarities Between Waiting For Godot And Aubade
After reading both the poem ââ¬Å"Aubadeâ⬠by Phillip Larkin and the play Waiting for Godot by Samuel Becket, I notice common themes of waiting and suffering, however in ââ¬Å"Aubadeâ⬠the man is alone thinking about his life and in Waiting for Godot the two main characters wait together and encounter a couple other people. In both stories I think that the characters are just waiting to die. They both mention the fact that death is an option and inevitable. In Waiting for Godot the two main characters Vladimir and Estragon even contemplate committing suicide more than once. Whereas in ââ¬Å"Aubadeâ⬠the man fearââ¬â¢s dying and reflect on the fact that everyday that we wake up we are one day closer to our death. One of the main themes in both stories isâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In Waiting for Godot the two main characters at least have each other to try to stay entertained. Although I am not sure if I would call their relationship a friendship because they tend to pull away from each other and bicker frequently. For example there is a scene in Act 1, where Estragon tries to tell Vladimir about a dream that he had and Vladimir wont let him talk about it. Even though they are not alone you still get a sense that they are isolating themselves. Since they donââ¬â¢t really have anything they have to do but wait time seems to go by very slowly. I found it funny when they were discussing what they did yesterday and neither of them could even remember. All the repetition and waiting starts to drive them to the point of contemplating whether suicide is better than living. Thinking about committing suicide is normally a depressing concept however in this story they make a joke out of it becaus e even if they wanted to commit suicide they couldnt because they dont have a rope and neither of them will remember to bring one. I felt as a reader that I was also waiting for something that never happen because the plot had no major events it was just meaningless conversations. The second theme that I will be discussing is suffering. In ââ¬Å"Aubadeâ⬠, along with fearing death the man also talks about his dissatisfaction with his life. From reading the poem you learn
